Enjoy a relaxed sunset kayak and paddleboard rental in one of the best evening paddling spots in the Florida Keys. This easy bayside route launches right behind the 7 Mile Grill, next to the Seven Mile Bridge on the Marathon side, and is the only rental location where sunset paddling is possible.
Rentals launch two hours before sunset, giving you plenty of time to explore calm, shallow water that is clear and full of marine life. From the launch it is only about a half mile paddle to Fanny Key. You cannot land on the island, but you can paddle around it and enjoy wide open views to the west, making it a perfect place to watch the sunset over the water. Stingrays, fish, turtles, and birds are commonly seen feeding in the flats along the way.
The paddle to the island and back is about one mile round trip and can take as little as twenty minutes at an easy pace. That means there is no rush. You can take your time, drift, explore, and enjoy how the light and colors change as the sun drops closer to the horizon.
Guests may stay out up to one hour after sunset. If you plan to paddle after the sun goes down, you must have a headlamp. Underwater lights are optional but highly recommended for seeing marine life after dark. Headlamps and underwater lights are available as rental add ons if you do not have your own.
If you do not have a headlamp or underwater light, you must begin paddling back within fifteen minutes after the sun goes below the horizon. Paddling in at sunset still allows you to return with enough natural light and does not require navigation lights.
This is our shortest and easiest rental, perfect for beginners, families, and anyone looking for a calm, low effort way to experience a Florida Keys sunset from the water. This experience is offered at this location only, since our other rental areas close at sunset and do not allow enough time to safely enjoy the evening.
